On the 5th of July 2023, Secerna hosted its highly anticipated third taster day, aiming to inspire and empower the next generation of talented patent attorneys.
The event aimed to provide undergraduate students with first hand experience of working in intellectual property (IP) and life in a private practice IP firm. Practical tasks were incorporated to showcase the skills required for client projects, while attendees also had the opportunity to interact with and shadow members of the Secerna team.
Lois Rawlance, who is studying Biological Sciences at The University of Edinburgh:
“Attending the taster day at Secerna surpassed all my expectations. Through presentations given by partners, associates, and trainees we learnt all about the firm and life as a patent attorney. Then through small group work, which was led by a trainee, we got to experience the kind of work that we would be doing as patent attorneys. The day that I spent at Secerna has left me feeling informed about the sector of intellectual property and excited to pursue a career as a patent attorney.
Secerna Partner, Jason Boakes said: "We are keen to keep giving talented young science and technology graduates looking for an alternative to a career in industry an insight into our profession. We wanted to show just how rewarding and challenging a role as a patent attorney can be, and it is days like our taster day that allow us to share insights into how IP works and answer any questions they may have.
The group who participated in the taster day exhibited the fundamental skills necessary to excel as outstanding attorneys. My hope is that they departed from the event feeling inspired to embark on a career in patent law, with a firm belief in their ability to thrive in this domain."
