Key Trends in Patents, Trade marks, and Designs Revealed

A year of economic uncertainty appears to have given way to renewed confidence in the world of intellectual property, according to figures released today by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). After a dip in 2023, the organisation’s key registries have seen a marked uptick in patent, trade mark, and design applications, suggesting that global innovation is once again on the rise.

Patent applications see modest but significant growth

The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) has witnessed a 0.5% increase in filings, reaching 273,900 applications. This reversal of fortunes marks a critical turning point, suggesting a renewed commitment to protecting technological advancements across international borders.

China continues to lead in PCT filings, but the Republic of Korea has demonstrated the most dramatic growth, reflecting the rapid expansion of its tech sector.

Digital communication leads technological innovation

A notable shift in technological focus has emerged, with digital communication now surpassing computer technology as the leading field for patent applications. This trend highlights the relentless pace of change in our interconnected world and the fierce competition to protect the innovations that drive it. Tech giants such as Huawei Technologies, Samsung, and Qualcomm are leading the charge, reinforcing their strategic focus on IP protection.

Trade mark filings rebound, signalling brand protection priority

The Madrid System, which oversees international trade marks, has also experienced a resurgence, with applications up by 1.2%, totalling 65,000. This increase underscores the renewed emphasis on brand protection in the global marketplace. The United States leads in trade mark filings, with L’Oréal retaining its position as the top filer. Growth from companies like Novartis and BYD signals a broader trend of businesses investing in IP to secure their competitive edge.

Industrial design applications hit record high

Industrial design applications, facilitated by the Hague System, have reached an all-time high, with a 6.8% increase. This surge emphasizes the growing importance of aesthetics and functionality in product design. China leads in design filings, with Procter & Gamble emerging as the top filer. The prominence of automotive companies like Porsche and Ferrari highlights the crucial role of design in driving consumer demand within the automotive industry.

WIPOs role in supporting global innovation

WIPO Director General Daren Tang emphasized the organization’s pivotal role in supporting innovation and facilitating global trade. Beyond the raw numbers, the report tells a story of evolving priorities and renewed ambition. As businesses and innovators navigate an uncertain world, protecting their intellectual property remains a critical strategic imperative. The rise in dispute resolution cases further underscores the increasing importance of robust IP strategies.
